Income
The covenant owns an iron mine on the southern end of Briavel Hill, which was first discovered with the use of the 'Wooden Mask' created by Turold. This produces good quality ore that is brought to the covenant for smelting, and then either sold on, or worked by the covenant's smith.
By using 'Ruaridh's Hammer' the covenant is able to produce finished building blocks from rough, uncut stone. These are then transported to Gloucester and sold for a modest profit.
Severn Temple's gardens and small livestock holding (12 chickens, 5 ewes, 1 ram, 3 goats) provide a small amount of their food requirements, thus saving a small sum.
The Fox and Chicken, and attached brewery, provide somewhere for the covenant's grogs to relax when not on duty. It also enables the covenant to relieve them of a fair proportion of their wages.
Aelfwin trained an apprentice in the art of glassblowing, and his wares fetch a pretty penny at the markets in Gloucester and Chepstow.
Henry the bargeman donates some of his profits from his business to the covenant in return for the use of the Saucy Weasel.
Expenditure
Food and wages accounts for a fair proportion of the covenant's expenditure. In addition there are generally two large feasts during the year, one on the Winter solstice, and one on some other variable day of the year.
Taxes to the king, to pay for the landholding, are the single biggest expense that Severn Temple incurs. These have caused many problems in the past, but negotiations with the Reeve have been more successful in recent years.
The covenant puts some money aside each year to pay for extra provisions in case of drought or famine.
