Description and personality
Kai is a river otter and looks like a healthy example of his kind. A keen fisher and swimmer, Kai is always up for a fishing competition or a swimming race. Not the bravest of beasts, Kai is especially frightened of dogs and avoids going anywhere near the kennels and hides if Drudwhil comes too close. Nevertheless he has a very inquisitive nature and is forever poking his nose into new places. Kai has a naturally exuberant and playful nature and is prone to poking fun at people, though never in a malicious way. Through the familiar bonds with Tiarnan, Kai can speak Latin and Gaelic, and a little English.
Kai's views on the magi at 1161 AD
Aelfwin
Aelfwin's a gentle sort and he's certainly never been anything other than friendly to me, though if his children try and pull my tail like they do with some of the dogs then they're going to get a nasty nip, whether Aelfwin likes it or not. I don't see why he gets so wound up about Blackney though, I've been there on my way to the river and it's a boring, noisy, stinking place.
Astrius
I know that Tiarnan doesn't like him and although he does get rather cross every now and again and start shouting, he seems likeable enough. I just wish he wouldn't associate with all those dogs. I'm sure the new one has already been sizing me up as potential dinner material...
Cormoran
He's a bit dim is Cormoran and entertainingly slow on the uptake. Cormoran can be quite self-centered and seems to have a big problem with keeping his trap shut. I also have to be careful that he doesn't tread on me and his magic is awfully loud. On the bright side however, he's one of the only magi who's up for a game or a swim, and it's definitely more fun having him around than not.
Dialectica
Seems pleasant enough though a bit stuffy and formal. It's difficult to see why Theo mated with her, but then that's humans for you. I know Tiarnan's worried about her bossy nature, but we've been able to go to the river or the faerie regio whenever we like so she can't be that bad.
Medius
Dull, prissy, and self-important. When he gets cross Medius has got a scary bulging-eyed gaze that makes me want to hide under the table. He reminds me of a stuck-up old heron that I used to know, except he's not the sort to want to get his feet wet. I can't imagine what animal in their right mind would want to be his familiar, some sort of toad perhaps?
Theo
A likeable sort who's happy wandering through the woods and by the river. Tiarnan tells me Theo wants to have a lion for his familiar! I'm not altogether clear on what a lion actually is, but I can tell that Theo's just not the big scary carnivore type. Maybe we could find him a nice wise salmon like the one out of that legend he's always going on about? That way, even if things didn't work out with it we'd at least get a tasty meal!
