Description
A large covenant, well protected from outsiders by virtue of its inaccessable location high in the Black Moutains. The covenant is almost permanently shrouded in mist, and can only be approached by the single narrow path that winds its way up the mountain side. Built into the very mountain, Blackthorn leads into a network of caves that extend deep underground where the older magi have built their laboratories and sancti. The deeper one travels the stronger the magical aura becomes. Eloria claims to have measured magnitudes as high as 8+ in the deeper catacombs. There is said to be a magical entity which resides deep in the caves, the nature of which has never been revealed. The caves may also extend to a magical regio, but the existence of such is little more than speculative. Rich seams of gold and silver once existed, but they have now been all but mined out.
Background
The second oldest covenant in the Tribunal of Stonehenge, Blackthorn was until recently the seat of the Praeco. Now, however, the covenant appears to be sliding towards Winter. The strong magical aura has warped many of the grogs; their skins are pale, almost white, and some are said to have developed the ability to see in absolute darkness. Morale is very poor though. It is only the presence of Geris that keeps order, and Blackthorn has great difficulty in attracting new soldiers. With the presence of the senior Quaesitor and the only gifted Redcap, the covenant still has a role to play in the life of the Tribunal, but it is a rather passive one now that the Praecoship has moved on. The two oldest magi; Nostrius and Xeros, have become increasingly reclusive. Both are close to final twilight. Lamark spends much of his time away, in the North of Africa or the Holy Lands. Eloria is the only magus to currently have an active interest in Hermetic Politics, but even her influence has waned with that of her covenant.
Major attributes
Blackthorn has a huge library, by far the largest in the Tribunal. It is rumoured that a copy of Arcania Mundi, a famous tome written by Bonisagus himself, exists within the private library. As well as a formidable number of magical texts and spell grimoires, the library is also exceptionally rich in mundane lore. Few magi outside the covenant ever have access to such tomes. However, even the visitors' library is impressive. The magi usually charge half of a rook of vis per season study of the visitors' library. Access to the private library must be negotiated on an individual basis.
